Maximizing Your Health Savings: How to Use HSA and FSA For Functional Medicine

If you’re investing in your health with Clinic 5C Functional Medicine, you may be wondering how to make the most of your financial resources.
We have a number of providers that range from cash-pay to accepting insurance, but that doesn’t stop you from using your HSA accounts.
Many patients don’t realize that Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) can be used to cover a variety of Functional Medicine services, making it easier to access the care you need while maximizing your healthcare dollars.
What Are HSA and FSA Accounts?
Both HSAs and FSAs are pre-tax accounts designed to help individuals pay for eligible medical expenses. However, they have some key differences:
- HSA (Health Savings Account) – Available to individuals with a high-deductible health plan (HDHP), these accounts allow you to save money tax-free for qualified medical expenses. HSAs roll over from year to year and are often seen as long-term savings tools for healthcare needs.
- FSA (Flexible Spending Account) – Offered by employers, FSAs allow employees to set aside pre-tax dollars for healthcare expenses. However, FSAs are typically “use it or lose it,” meaning funds must be used within the plan year or a designated grace period.
What Functional Medicine Services Are Eligible for HSA and FSA Reimbursement?
Many of the services provided in our Functional Medicine practice may be eligible for HSA and FSA reimbursement.
While eligibility depends on your specific plan, the following services are commonly covered:
- Doctor’s Visits – Consultations and follow-up visits with your Functional Medicine provider.
- Lab Testing – Bloodwork, advanced biomarker testing, hormone panels, food sensitivity tests, and other diagnostic labs.
- Nutritional Counseling – Many plans recognize diet and nutrition as a key component of health.
- Acupuncture & Chiropractic Care – If recommended by a healthcare provider, these services may be eligible. (While we don’t provide these services in-house, we can recommend trusted partners for this resource)
- Prescription Supplements – Certain physician-recommended supplements may qualify if prescribed as part of a treatment plan.
- Regenerative Therapies – Depending on your plan, treatments like PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) or other regenerative medicine approaches may be covered.
- Healing Modalities - Oftentimes, you can get therapies and modalities covered by insurance, or eligible for HSA reimbursement. For example, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is often covered by insurance for these common conditions, and reimbursable with HSA and FSA.
How to Use Your HSA or FSA at Our Clinic
- Check Your Insurance Plan – Every plan is different, so it’s important to check with your provider to confirm what’s covered.
- Pay with Your HSA/FSA Card - Most accounts come with a debit card that you can use directly for qualifying services.
- Submit for Reimbursement – If you pay out-of-pocket, we can provide an itemized receipt for you to submit to your HSA or FSA administrator.
- Get a Letter of Medical Necessity (If Required) – Some services, such as advanced lab testing or supplements, may require a letter from your provider to confirm medical necessity. If you need one for reimbursement, reach out to us and we can help provide any documents necssary.
Don’t Let Your FSA Funds Go to Waste
Since FSAs typically have an expiration date, it’s important to use those funds before they expire at the end of the plan year. If you have remaining FSA dollars, consider booking a Functional Medicine consultation, lab testing, or treatments to optimize your health.
